DAM ON THE YELLOW RIVER  (1960)  Original title: "Apocalisse Sul Fiume Giallo."  Rare action/drama from Italy, which casts Georges Marchal as a renegade journalist in China, who discovers a Communist plot to blow up a large dam, which would kill thousands of civilians.  While covering the plot, he meets up with a missionary (played by Anita Ekberg), and together they work to thwart the scheme.  But they must also evade the Asian assassin Wong (played by George Wang), who tries to have them killed.  Directed by Renzo Merusi.  Dubbed in English, with Greek subtitles.  (B/B-).

DAMNED IN VENICE  (1977)  Original title: "Nero Veneziana." Uncut letterboxed print of this Italian takeoff of "Rosemary's Baby."  A blind boy receives a vision that warns him of the birth of the anti-Christ.  Low on the technical end, high on the atmosphere and suspense.  Stars Renato Cestie, Lorraine De Selle, Olga Karlatos, and others.  Directed by Ugo Liberatore.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B). 

DAMNED PISTOLS OF DALLAS  (1966)  Original title: "Las Malditas Pistolas de Dallas."  Rare Spanish western, which casts Fred Beir as gunslinger who hunts down the gang responsible for hijacking a stagecoach in which he was a passenger.  Also starring Evi Marandi, Olivier Mathot, Angel Alvarez, and others.  Directed by Jose Maria Zabalza.  Letterboxed.  Dubbed in English.  (A/A-).

DAMON AND PYTHIAS  (1962)  Also known as: "The Tyrant of Syracuse."  Sword-and-sandal adventure starring Don Burnett as Pythias, an Athenian condemned to death by the tyrant of Syracuse, who finds this views dangerous. DANTE'S INFERNO  (1924)  The tactics of a vicious slumlord and greedy businessman finally drive a distraught man to commit suicide. DARK PURPOSE  (1964)  Original title: "L'Intrigo."  In this latter-day sort-of-remake of "Jane Eyre", Shirley Jones plays an innocent young American abroad (Italy, specifically) who becomes romantically involved with the always charming Rossano Brazzi, unaware that he has a nutty wife tucked away in an attic.  Also stars George Sanders and Giorgia Moll.  Directed by Vittorio Sala.  Dubbed in English, with Swedish subtitles. DAY AFTER TOMORROW  (1968)  Original title: "Uno Dopo L'Atro."  Richard Harrison plays a gunman who discovers that his friend has been killed during a bank holdup.  He goes after those responsible.  Also starring Pamela Tudor, Paolo Gozlino, Jose Bodalo, and others.  Directed by Nick Nostro.  Dubbed in English.  (A/A-). 

DAY KILLER  (1974)  Original title: "5 Donne per L'Assassino."  Bogusly packaged as a John Carpenter film, this rare giallo is about a reporter who comes home from assignment to find his baby in the hospital and his wife dead. The baby isn't his, the reporter learns from his doctor friend Lydia (Pascale Rivault), as he is quite sterile. Reporter Giorgio and Lydia soon become lovers, and she narrowly escapes the brutal hands of the murderer (or murderers) who claims several other victims in shockingly violent fashion.  Directed by Stelvio Massi.  Dubbed in Italian, with no subtitles.  (B/B-). 

DAY THE SKY EXPLODED, THE  (1958)  Italian sci-fi thriller from director Paolo Heusch.  Scientists discover that a group of meteors are hurtling on a collison course with Earth, and if they hit, the planet will be destroyed.  Paul Hubschmid, Fiorella Mari, Ivo Garrani, and others.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

DEADLY CHASE  (1979)  Original title: "Commissario Verrazzano."  English-language print of this action-packed crime flick from director Franco Prosperi.  Luc Merenda plays a police investigator who goes undercover to find out the facts in a case of homicide.  The clues lead him to Giulia (played by Janet Agren), owner of a fashionable art gallery who has secret connections with the criminals responsible.  Also starring Patrizia Gori, Daniele Dublino, and others.  Dubbed in English.  (B/B-).

DEAF SMITH AND JOHNNY EARS  (1972)  Original title: "Los Amigos."  Set in 1830's Texas just after the Republic won its independence from Mexico. President Sam Houston instructs one of his agents, deaf-mute Erastus "Deaf" Smith, to infiltrate and put down one of the growing rebel factions. Accompanying him is his friend Johnny Ears, who must not only do Smith's hearing for him, but must also conceal Smith's handicap, as the rebels have intercepted a message that a deaf-mute spy is in their midst.  Stars Franco Nero, Anthony Quinn, Pamela Tiffin, and others.  Directed by Paolo Cavara.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

DEATH AT OWELL ROCK  (1967)  Also known as: "Death Does Not Count the Dollars."  Here's a rare treat for Spaghetti Western fans, Riccardo Freda's only attempt at the genre, and it's a shame he didn't make more. A town is controlled by the Lester gang who murder anyone in their path. Mark Damon plays a peaceful type who turns violent when he discovers they murdered his father.  Also stars Stephen Forsyth, Pamela Tudor, Luciana Gilli, Nello Pazzafini, and others.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

DEATH COMES DOWN SLOWLY  (1972)  Original title: "La Morte Scende Leggera."  Rare giallo starring Stelio Candelli, Patrizia Viotti, Tom Felleghy, and others.  Directed by Leopoldo Savona.  Dubbed in Italian, with no subtitles.  (A-/B).

DEATH IN HAITI (1972)  Also known as: "Tropic of Cancer."  One of the more brutal gialli available, this one casts Anthony Steffen as a physician living in Haiti, who's discovered a formula for medicine that could cure cancer.  Sure enough, the criminal element is after his drug, and Steffen has all he can do to guard it from their greedy hands.  Matters are complicated when an old friend (played by Gabriele Tinti) comes to visit him, soon after which a killer enters the scene.  Some rather grisly deaths follow, in which the murderer takes morbid delight in putting his victims through as much pain as possible.  Also stars Anita Strindberg, Umberto Raho, Stelio Candelli, and others.  Directed by Edoardo Mulargia.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B). 

DEATH IS NIMBLE, DEATH IS QUICK  (1966)  Original title: "Kommissar X: Drei Gelbe Katzen."  Another great crime action flick from the celebrated "Kommissar X" series.  Interpol agent Captain Rowland (Brad Harris) and former New York City cop-now-super private eye Joe Walker (Tony Kendall) are called in to investigate a murder in the exotic locale of Ceylon where they encounter the sinister crime organization, the Three Yellow Cats.  Directed by Rudolf Zehetgruber.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

DEATH KNOCKS TWICE  (1969)  Also known as: "La Morte Bussa Due Volte."  Stylish giallo from director Harald Phillip, about a series of murders occurring at and near a posh hotel resort.  Lots of elaborate plot twists and red herrings, all done in the Edgar Wallace tradition.  An Italian-German co-production.  Starring Dean Reed, Fabio Testi, Anita Ekberg, Adolfo Celi, Werner Peters, and others.  Dubbed in English.  (B/B-).

DEATH OF A FRIEND  (1959)  Original title: "Morte di un Amico."  Gianni Garko and Spiros Focas play two pimps hustling in the back-alleys of Rome, in this black and white crime drama from director Franco Rossi.  Also starring Didi Perego, Angela Luce, Andrea Scotti, and others.  Story by Pier Paolo Pasolini.  Dubbed in Italian, with English subtitles.  (A-/B).

DEATH ON A HIGH MOUNTAIN  (1969)  Original title: "La Morte Sull'Alta Collina."  Very rare spaghetti western starring Peter Lee Lawrence, Luis Davila, Tano Cimarosa, Agnes Spaak, Nello Pazzafini, and others.  Directed by Fernando Cerchio.  Dubbed in English, with Hebrew subtitles.  (B/B-).

DEATH PAYS IN DOLLARS  (1966)  Original title: "Furia a Marrakech."  Mino Loy and Luciano Martino direct this excellent spy action thriller, starring Stephen Forsyth, Dominique Boschero, Cristina Gaioni, Giovanni Di Benedetto, and others.  Dubbed in English.  (B/B-).

DEATH RAY MIRROR OF DR. MABUSE, THE  (1964)  Internationally produced thriller features several great performers in nonstop action intrigue.  The evil Dr. Mabuse (Wolfgang Preiss) develops a death ray with which he threatens the world, and plans to bring about WWIII.  Also stars Peter Van Eyck, Yvonne Furneaux, Claudio Gora, Dieter Eppler, and others.  Directed by Hugo Fregonese.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

DEATH SMILES AT MURDER  (1973)  Klaus Kinski is a doctor who discovers an ancient Incan formula for raising the dead, and uses it for a series of revenge murders.  Very strange, atmospheric, giallo-like film from director Aristide Massaccesi.  Also stars Angela Bo, Ewa Aulin, Giacomo Rossi-Stuart, and Luciano Rossi.  Dubbed in English.  (A/A-). 

DEATH STEPS IN THE DARK  (1977)  Original title: "Passi di Morte Perduti nel Buio."  Excellent giallo from director Maurizio Pradeaux.  An Italian reporter is traveling on the Instanbul-Athens train. A woman is murdered with the reporter's letter-opener, so that makes him the main suspect. With the help of his Swedish girlfriend he starts investigating in order to prove his innocence, and find out who the real killer is.  Stars Leonard Mann, Robert Webber, Vera Krouska, and others.  Dubbed in English, with Dutch subtitles.  (A-/B).

DEATH WALKS IN HIGH HEELS  (1972)  Original title: "La Morte Cammina con i Tracchi Alti."  Rare English-language print of this giallo from director Luciano Ercoli.  A famed jewel thief named Rochard is slashed to death on a train. His daughter Nicole, a famous nightclub performer in Paris, is questioned by the police about some missing diamonds but she claims to know nothing. Nicole is then terrorized by a masked man with piercing blue eyes who demands to know where her father has hidden the stolen diamonds. Suspecting that her jealous boyfriend Michel may be the man who is harassing her, Nicole and her new-found friend Dr. Robert Matthews escape to England and apparent safety. DESERT COMMANDOS  (1967)  Original title: "Attentato Ai Tre Grandi."  Five German commandos are parachuted into the Sahara desert, and must make their way to Casablanca, where Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin are holding a top-secret meeting. Their mission is to kill all three of them!  Umberto Lenzi directs another top-notch action flick, which stars Ken Clark, Horst Frank, Jeanne Valerie, Gianni Rizzo, Carlo Hinterman, Howard Ross, Fabienne Dali, and Franco Fantasia.  Upgrade!!  Dubbed in English.  (A/A-).

DESERT OF FIRE  (1971)  Also known as: "Deserto Di Fuoco."  El Marish, an evil bandit, makes it a habit of plundering caravans containing supplies for a desert mining operation.  After he forces himself on the daughter of the chief engineer, a stranger shows up who takes an interest in her, and decides to put an end to El Marish for good.  Stars George Wang, Giuseppe Addobbati, Edwige Fenech, and Carla Mancini.  Directed by Renzo Merusi.   Dubbed in English, with Greek subtitles.  (A-/B). 

DESERT RENEGADES  (1966)  Original title: "Una Rafaga de Plomo."  Desert action from directors Paolo Heusch and Antonio Santillan.  In the deserts of the Middle East, circa 1930s, a half-Arab-half-French adventurer named Aldar woos the Princess Yasmin while engaged in selling guns to warring factions.  Robert Hoffmann, Marilu Tolo, Jose Calvo.  Dubbed in English.  (B/B-). 

DETECTIVE MALONE  (1990)  Also known as: "Black Cobra 4."  Italian crime drama starring Fred Williamson, Bruno Bilotta, Bobby Rhodes, Gaetano Russo, Maurice Poli, and others.  Directed by Umberto Lenzi.  Dubbed in English, with Japanese subtitles.  (A/A-).

DEVIL IN THE BRAIN  (1972)  Original title: "Il Diavolo Nel Cervello."  Rare horror oddity, which concerns a child who murders his father.  After being committed to a psychiatric clinic, the doctor pronounces the child in perfect health.  But the doctor has had a previous affair with the mother...  The plot gets weirder as the film progresses.  Stars Micheline Presle, Keir Dullea, and others.  Directed by Sergio Bergonzelli.  Dubbed in Italian, with English subtitles.  But fair/poor quality only.  (C/C-).

DEVIL WITH SEVEN FACES, THE  (1972)  Stylish giallo/thriller, which casts Carroll Baker as twin sisters, one of whom works for a high-class attorney (played by Stephen Boyd).  A killer, however, begins stalking the secretary, and it becomes obvious that an expensive diamond is what he's after.  George Hilton shows up just in time to shield her from the killer's attempts, but as the tension mounts it becomes evident that Baker is somehow involved more than she's willing to admit.  Or is it really her sister who holds the key to the whole mystery?  Also starring Lucretia Love, Ivano Staccioli, Luciano Pigozzi, and others.  Directed by Osvaldo Civirani.  Dubbed in English, with Greek subtitles.  (A-/B).

DEVIL'S ISLAND  (1939)  For treating a wounded revolutionary, respected brain surgeon Dr. Gaudet is sentenced to the hellish French penal colony on Devil's Island. There, he rebels against the inhuman conditions and incurs the wrath of the brutal commander, Colonel Lucien. DIAMONDS ARE A MAN'S BEST FRIEND  (1966)  Original title: "Ray Master, L'Inafferrabile."  Extraordinarily rare English-language print of this heist action caper from director Vittorio Sala.  A celebrated thief robs a princess of a precious diamond.  However, it soon appears that he's stolen the wrong one.  So he heads to Bangkok, where he engineers a massive heist with the aid of high-tech equipment.  At the same time, however, a crime lord hires lovely female to keep her eye on the jewel-thief, as he has his own plans for the diamond.  Swingin' 60's fun starring Felix Martin, Gastone Moschin, Luciano Pigozzi, Seyna Seyn, Liana Orfei, and others.  Dubbed in English, with Greek subtitles.  (A-/B).

During an argument, however, he wounds her with a shotgun, and she ends up in critical condition.  The history of the affair is then played out.  Stars Valentina Cortese, Ettore Manni, Massimo Giroti, and others.  Dubbed in Italian, with no subtitles.  (B/B-).

DIRTY FIFTEEN, THE  (1968)  Also known as: "Quindici Forche per un Assassino."  Rare spaghetti western starring Craig Hill as leader of a gang accused of murdering three women.  A vigilante (played by Howard Ross) goes out to get even, but who is the real killer?  Also starring Aldo Sambrell, Suzy Anderson, Andrea Bosic, and others.  Directed by Nunzio Malasomma.  Dubbed in English.  (B/B-).

DJANGO, ADIOS  (1972)  Original title: "Semino la Morte...
