EL MACHO  (1977)  Also known as: "Macho Killers."  The sheriff of Abilene (played by Miguel Bose') talks a gunman (Carlos Munson) into impersonating a criminal outlaw.  He hopes by this method to infiltrate a gang of bank robbers led by "The Duke" (George Hilton).  Spaghetti western directed by Marcello Andrei.  Dubbed in English.  (B/B-).

EL ROJO  (1967)  The Sorenson family is massacred, apparently by Indians. On the site of the killing, a town is established, run by a group of businessmen. EMERALD OF ARTATAMA, THE  (1969)  Original title: "La Muchacha Del Nilo."  Rory Calhoun stars as an archaeological professor who goes to Egypt in search of a sacred emerald.  While there, he encounters criminals also searching for the jewel, and must battle it out with them.  Directed by Jose Maria Elorrieta.  Dubbed in English.  (A/A-).

EN BUSCA DEL DRAGON DORADO  (1983)  Strange adaptation of Poe's "The Gold Bug" from director Jess Franco.  The story is about a little girl (Flavia Hervas) who becomes involved in the search for an ancient treasure, hidden by Oriental natives to prevent strangers from locating it. The immortal original tale is crazily moved into a kids-oriented martial arts movie, which mixes the Tarzan classic spirit with the gruesome humor of its Spanish director.  Also starring Jess Franco, Ivana Mayans, Rosa Maria Minumer, and others.  Dubbed in Spanish, with no subtitles.  (A-/B).

ESMERALDA BAY  (1989)  Upgrade!!  Low-budget action from director Jess Franco.  A priest secretly leads rebels in their struggle against the corrupt military dictatorship of the Central American country of Puerto Santo.  Robert Forster, George Kennedy, Fernando Rey, Craig Hill, and others.  Dubbed in English, with Japanese subtitles.  (A/A-).

EUROPEAN NIGHTS  (1958)  Original title: "Europa di Notte."  Hard-to-find film which is an early entry in the "mondo" genre, explores the various forms of European night life of the late 1950's.  Good stuff starring Coccinelle, Channing Pollock, Carmen Sevilla, and others.  Directed by Alessandro Blasetti.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

EVIL EYE, THE  (1974)  Now in English!!  Original title: "Eroticofollia."  This is really one of the most macabre and unusual horror films ever to come out of Italy.  A young man (Luis Latorre) suffers from bizarre and inexplicable nightmares.  He seeks help at a local clinic, but while he is under outpatient observation, people that are close to him start getting murdered.  An investigator (played by Antonio De Teffe) is assigned to track down the murderer, but he finds that he is able to make little headway.  In fact, horrible coincidences and agonizing deaths begin occurring around his person, too.  This film contains a fair amount of gore.  Stars also Richard Conte, Eduardo Fajardo, and Daniela Giordano.  Directed by Mario Siciliano.  Dubbed in English, with Spanish subtitles.  (B/B-)

EXECUTIONER OF THE SEVEN SEAS  (1961)  Also known as: Avenger of the Seven Seas."  An Englishman (Richard Harrison) is captured by pirates after the merciless sacking of his village.  However, he vows revenge against the Spaniards responsible for the atrocity.  Michele Mercier, Roldano Lupi, Walter Barnes, and Paul Muller, also star.  Directed by Domenico Paolella.  Upgrade!!  Dubbed in English, with Greek subtitles.  (A-/B).

EXECUTIONER OF VENICE  (1963)  This classic costume adventure has been properly hailed as one of the best-made entries in the genre.  Lex Barker plays Sandrigo Bembo, son of the Doge of Venice, who comes to fall by a conspiracy planted by the Grand Inquisitor (played by Guy Madison), so he can steal Bembo's fiancée (Alessandra Panaro). However, Bembo manages to escape the prison, and the whetted steel clashes continuously, as he faces innumerable perils - all in 16th century Venice.  Mario Petri, Alberto Farnese, Franco Fantasia, John Bartha, and Erminio Spalla, also star in this 70mm romance from director Luigi Capuano.  Dubbed in English.  (A/A-).

EXORCIST 3: CRIES AND SHADOWS  (1975)  Original title: "Un Urlo Nelle Tenebre."  Italian horror shocker, which shamelessly rips off "The Exorcist"-- and hence the title.  This movie starts with a teenager Peter (Jean-Claude Verne), who takes a picture of a mysterious naked woman (Mimma Monticelli) near a pastoral waterfall. When the picture is developed, the woman's image is gone, and Peter is possessed by her ghost through a cursed amulet he finds at the scene.  Also stars Richard Conte, Francoise Prevost, Elena Svevo, and others.  Directed by Angelo Pannaccio and Franco Lo Cascio.  Dubbed in English.  (B/B-).

EXTERMINATORS FROM THE YEAR 3000  (1983)  Original title: "Gli Sterminatori dell'Anno 3000."  Post-nuke action from director Giuliano Carnimeo.  A nuclear war has turned the earth into a desert. A group of survivors in a cave run out of water and desperately need new supply. The last guy they sent out didn't return. EYE BEHIND THE STARS  (1978)  Sci-fi horror from Italy.  A photographer and his model are on a photo shoot in a forest when they get the feeling they are being watched. The feeling becomes so strong that they decide to cut their session short and leave. Later, when they develop the photos they took, they discover what looks like alien creatures in the background.  Starring Robert Hoffmann, Martin Balsam, Nathalie Delon, and others.  Directed by Mario Gariazzo.  Dubbed in English.  (B/B-).

EYE BEHIND THE WALL  (1977) This odd and obscure Italian mix of giallo and drama tells the strange story of an old paralyzed writer (Fernando Rey), his younger wife (Olga Bisera) and a young man (John Phillip Law) who lives in an apartment the couple rent him. What the young man doesn't know: the writer watches him on a telescope whose lens has been installed in the wall of the apartment. The wife becomes fascinated by the mysterious man too, and - needless to say - this "triangular relationship" won't come to a happy end.  Directed by Giuliano Petrelli.  Dubbed in Italian, with English subtitles.  (A-/B).

EYE IN THE LABYRINTH  (1971)  Original title: "L'Occhio nel Labirinto."  Another violent and misogynistic giallo, about a group of youths plagued by a series of murders at an isolated seaside villa.  Lots of suspense in this hard-to-find entry starring Adolfo Celi, Sybil Danning, Rosemary Dexter, Horst Frank, Benjamin Lev, and others.  Directed by Mario Caiano.  Dubbed in English, with Greek subtitles.  (B/B-).

FABIOLA  (1948)  158-minute print.  One of the classic peplums of all time.  In ancient Rome, a love story blossoms between Fabiola, daughter of a senator, and Rhual, a Gallic gladiator. When Fabiola's father is killed, the Romans blame the Christians and the persecution begins.  Rhual confesses to be a Christian and is accused of the murder and sentenced to fight to death in the arena.  Stars Michele Morgan, Henri Vidal, Elisa Cegani, Massimo Girotti, Gino Cervi, and others.  Directed by Alessandro Blasetti.  Dubbed in Italian, with no subtitles.  (B/B-).

FABULOUS BARON MUNCHAUSEN, THE  (1960)  Original title: "Baron Prasil."  The outrageous Baron Munchausen tells of his many adventures, from meeting the Man in the Moon to defeating a Turkish army all by himself.  Great animation starring Milos Kopecky, Rudolf Jelinek, Jana Brejchova, and others.  Directed by Karel Zeman.  Dubbed in English.  (A/A-).

FACE OF EVE, THE  (1968)  Also known as: "Eve."  A hunting expedition in the Amazon jungle comes across a beautiful princess who is able to keep her tribe in line using her psychic powers. FALCON, THE  (1981)  Original title: "Banovic Strahinja."  Yugoslavian adventure epic starring Franco Nero.  In late 14th century medieval Serbia becomes the target of Ottoman invaders. One of their renegade gangs burns the castle and takes young wife of Banovic Strahinja, a respected Serbian noble. Banovic Strahinja begins long and almost futile quest for her wife despite everybody else's doubts in her fidelity.  Directed by Vatroslav Mimica.  Dubbed in English.  (A/A-).

FALCON OF THE DESERT  (1965)  Original title: "El Halcon del Desierto."  Seldom-seen desert adventure, which involves a young nomad (Kirk Morris) who is roped into working in the service of a great Sultan (Franco Fantasia), who subsists by plundering the surrounding villages.  Also stars Erika Jones, Aldo Sambrell, and Juan Cortes.  Produced and written by Osvaldo Civirani.  Directed by Miguel Lluch.  Dubbed in English, with Dutch subtitles.  (A-/B).

FANTASTIC BALLOON VOYAGE  (1975)  Rene Cardona, Jr. directs this colorful adventure flick based on a Jules Verne story.  Three men attempt to cross Africa in a hot air balloon (circa) 1860.  Starring Hugo Stiglitz, Jeff Cooper, Jorge Zamora, and others.  Dubbed in English.  (A/A-).

FANTOMAS  (1964)  Criminal mastermind Fantômas, a man of a thousand faces, is unhappy with Fandor, a journalist whose written a fictive interview of him. He kidnaps Fandor, threatens to kill him, but first goes about ruining the journalist's reputation by committing a sensational crime in Fandor's guise. Hot on the trail is police Commissaire Juve, so Fantômas commits a crime looking like him. Soon, our intrepid heroes, Fandor and Juve, with the help of Fandor's girlfriend Hélène, are on the mastermind's trail, but who's in control?  Stars Jean Marais, Louis De Funes, Mylene Demongeot.  Directed by Andre Hunebelle.  Dubbed in French, with English subtitles.  (A-/B).

FANTOMAS STRIKES BACK  (1965)  This episode is definitely the more entertaining of the series starring Louis de Funès and Jean Marais. After the exciting "Fantômas" and before a weird #3 where the evil genius becomes a base racketeer who occasionally kills a lord of a Scottish manor, Fantômas se déchaîne is well packed with action and fun.  The directing is not so good as for North by northwest, a movie with the same tempo and fun to a too serious-acting. But it uses advisedly the James Bond toolkit. De Funès and Jean Marais are perfect to make the whole thing work throughout that good model of what was popular French cinema in the 60s.  Directed by Andre Hunebelle.  Dubbed in French, with English subtitles.  (A-/B).

FANTOMAS VS. SCOTLAND YARD  (1967)  Rare entry in the French "Fantomas" series.  Fantomas wants to collect money from the rich in exchange for letting them live. The French inspector (Louis de Funes) comes to a Scottish castle to protect its owner, and to catch Fantomas. But there's trouble at the castle, especially during one big evening party.  Also starring Jean Marais, Mylene Demongeot, and others.  Directed by Andre Hunebelle.  Dubbed in French, with English subtitles.  (A-/B).

FBI- OPERAZIONE VIPERA GIALLA  (1966)  Also known as: "Operation: Yellow Viper."  Extremely rare spy actioner starring Hellmut Lang, Adeline Wagner, Peer Schmidt, Massimo Serato, Moira Orfei, and others.  Directed by Alfredo Medori and Wolfgang Schleif.  Dubbed in German, with no subtitles.  (A/A-).

FEAST FOR THE DEVIL  (1971)  Disturbing Spanish-Italian horror.  A woman searching for her missing sister arrives at a small coastal village, where her sister was last seen. FEW DOLLARS FOR DJANGO, A  (1966)  Antonio De Teffe (a.k.a. Anthony Steffen) plays a bounty killer who is hired to clear a small town of a gang of dangerous bandits.  However, there is one that masquerades as a family man to earn his friendship.  Gloria Osuna, Frank Wolff, Joe Kamel, and Alfonso Rojas, also star in this spaghetti western from director Leon Klimovsky. FIFTH CORD, THE  (1971)  Original title: "Giornata Nera per L'Ariete."  Franco Nero stars as a drunken reporter implicated in a murder plot, because all those around him are being killed in a brutal fashion. His girlfriend (Pamela Tiffin) begins to get suspicious too. A well directed and photographed giallo that features Silvia Monti and Ira Furstenberg. FIGLIO DI AQUILA NERA, IL  (1967)  After Czar Alexander II names the vicious General Volkonsky as governor of the Caucasus, the Cossacks decide to plan a revolt. FINE PAIR, A  (1969)  Original title: "Ruba al Prossimo Tuo."  A detective (played by Rock Hudson) gets involved with the beautiful daughter of an old friend. The daughter turns out to be a jewel thief, who in turn gets the detective involved in a caper in Austria.  Nicely done comedy also starring Claudia Cardinale, Leon Askin, Guido Alberti, and others.  Directed by Francesco Maselli.  Dubbed in English.  (A/A-).

FIRE OVER ROME  (1965)  Original title: "L'Incendio Di Roma."  One of the rarest sword-and-sandals, this one takes place during the reign of the tyrant Nero.  Marcus Valerius (played by Lang Jeffries) a soldier serving under Menecrates, has been entrusted by the Roman government to persecute and capture the Christians.  However, he finds that the woman he loves (Cristina Gaioni) is a Christian.  Helping her to escape, he is arrested and condemned to fight in the arena.  However, he escapes once more and manages to gather together a large force to destroy Menecrates.  Also stars Demeter Bitenc, Moira Orfei, Evi Maltagliati, Mario Feliciani, and Franco Fantasia.  Directed by Guido Malatesta.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

FLATFOOT  (1973)  Original title: "Piedone Lo Sbirro."  Bud Spencer plays Flatfoot, an unconventional Italian detective with a soft heart for informants and prostitutes. In this flick he battles a well organized crime ring while dealing with a new boss who doesn't understand his methods.  Enzo Cannavale, Juliette Mayniel, Angelo Infanti, and Raymond Pellegrin, also star in this crime/action film from director Stefano Vanzina.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

FLOWER WITH THE PETALS OF STEEL, THE  (1973)  Original title: "Il Fiore dai Petali d'Acciaio."  Extremely sought after giallo, which was recently only available in washed out and degenerate prints.  This one is offered in widescreen format, excellent quality, and in Italian dialogue (the only language thus far available for viewing this film).  Stars Carroll Baker, Gianni Garko, Ivano Staccioli, Paola Senatore, and others.  Directed by Gianfranco Piccioli.  (A/A-).

FLYING SUPERBOY, THE  (1976)  Also known as: "Bas Belasi."  Alberto Dell'Acqua stars in this rare Turkish-Italian crime flick, as an undercover cop trying to nab a mafia organization.  Lots of great stunts, one of which involves Dell'Acqua being dragged along the ground at top speed.  Also stars Gulsen Bubikoglu, Sadri Alisik, and others.  Directed by Atif Yilmaz.   Note: print contains occasional brief picture dropouts.  Dubbed in English, with Dutch subtitles.  (B/B-).

FOOTPRINTS  (1975)  Original title: "Le Orme."  Excellent giallo from director Luigi Bazzoni.  Alice (Florinda Bolkan), a translator living in Italy, discovers that she has a memory loss and can't recall the last couple of days. She starts to follow a trace of memory fragments, which leads her to the small town of Garma. People in the town seem to recognize her and she's beginning to suspect that the re-occurring nightmares of astronauts conducting horrible experiments has something to do with her own amnesia.  Dubbed in English, with Greek subtitles.  (A-/B).

We then follow each of the robbers as their "four ways out" proceed to their ultimate conclusions. Claudio Cassinelli stars as a cop who teams up with a drug dealer (Tomas Milian) and three scummy thieves to save a kidnapped girl from slimy villain Henry Silva and his gang... well actually it's more about finally killing Silva.  Top-notch action/crime from director Umberto Lenzi.  Dubbed in English, with Dutch subtitles.  (B/B-).

FROM CORLEONE TO BROOKLYN  (1978)  Very violent mafia/crime by Umberto Lenzi.  Cops try to get a murder witness over to the U.S. to testify.  Along the way, they are constantly shot at, intimidated, and almost killed.  Stars Maurizio Merli and Mario Merola.  Dubbed in English.  (B/B-).

FROM THE POLICE... WITH THANKS  (1972)  Original title: "La Polizia Ringrazia."  Finally, a film from Steno (real name Stefano Vanzina) that isn't a comedy.  This crime thriller tells the gripping story of an organized vigilante group that kills criminals who couldn't be convicted by the courts.  Enrico Maria Salerno is brilliant as the police officer who tries to discover the big ones behind the vigilante group. Mario Adorf is convincing as ever- once more portraying a rather dubious district attorney.  Also stars Jurgen Drews, Corrado Gaipa, Laura Belli, and others.  Dubbed in English, with Dutch subtitles.  (A/A-).
