MATCHLESS  (1966)  A secret agent possesses a ring that makes him invisible for ten hours. He is in pursuit of an evil criminal mastermind, but at the same time must evade an enemy agent who also wants the ring. MISSION: BLOODY MARY  (1965)  When an H bomb is stolen by the Chinese in their plan for world domination, agent Dick Malloy (played by Ken Clark) is assigned to the case.  Also starring Helga Line, Philippe Hersent, Umberto Raho, and Susan Terry.  Directed by Sergio Grieco, a director whose skill increased steadily over the years.  This one shows him at his best, with well-orchestrated stunts, and that polished 70mm feel.  Dubbed in English.  (B/B-). 

MISSION: STARDUST  (1966)  Fantastic sci-fi adventure, but also spy thriller, about a team of astronauts who go to the moon in order to rescue a dying alien.  Along the way they are thwarted by a team of interstellar criminals.  Lang Jeffries, Essy Persson, Luis Davila, Gianni Rizzo.  Directed by Primo Zeglio.  (A-/B).

MISSION TO VENICE  (1964)  Also known as: "La Spia Che Venne Dall'Ovest."  French-Italian spy action thriller, which casts Sean Flynn as an American in Paris who gets mixed up in international espionage while searching for a woman's missing husband.  Also starring Karin Baal, Ettore Manni, Jacques Dufhilo, and others.  Directed by Andre Versini.  Dubbed in English.  (B/B-).

MONOCLE, THE  (1964)  Original title: "Le Monocle Rit Jaune."  French spy thriller.  A secret agent goes after a gang of Asian terrorists who are out to destroy an American nuclear aircraft carrier.  Here's a film that is rather unusual, with lots of action and a strange type of humor that only the French seem to understand.  Starring Paul Meurisse, Elga Anderson, Charles Millot, and Barbara Steele.  Directed by Georges Lautner.  Dubbed in English.  (B/B-).

M.M.M. 83  (1965)  Also known as: "Missione Mortale Molo 83."  Sergio Bergonzelli directs Fred Beir, Gerard Blain, Alberto Dalbes, Sylvia Solar, and Anna Maria Pierangeli. A British scientist is murdered in Sicily. Agent Morris (Beir) of the Secret Service finds a briefcase from the murder that contains a stolen formula for synthetic jet engine fuel.   However, someone is trying to kill him before he traces it to the source. Bergozelli considers this one of his best films, and we'd have to agree!  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

MR. DYNAMITE  (1967)  Also known as: "Spy Today, Die Tomorrow."  Lex Barker plays Bob Urban, a secret agent sent to Europe to get the goods on Bardo Baretti (played by Amedeo Nazzari) a criminal millionaire who has apparently arranged the theft of atomic weapons from the United States.  A really nice, extremely fast-paced 60's fling which also stars Maria Perschy, Brad Harris, and Gustavo Rojo.  Directed by Franz Josef Gottlieb.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

MURDERERS CLUB OF BROOKLYN  (1967)  Also known as: "Body in Central Park."  Jerry Cotton spy thriller starring George Nader as secret agent attempting to infiltrate a gang of criminals blackmailing rich business men.   Also starring Heinz Weiss, Karel Stepanek, and others.  Directed by Werner Jacobs.  Dubbed in English.  (A/A-).

NAZI S.S.  (1967)  Also known as: "Borman."  Here's an offbeat entry in the Sixties spy genre that involves both Neo-Nazis and original Nazis in a plot to revive the Fourth Reich. Secret agent Tobert Kent is put in charge of hunting down Martin Borman and squashing his plans for world domination. NEW YORK CALLING SUPERDRAGON  (1966)  Euro print of this spy/espionage thriller, released on video in the U.S. by the Something Weird company, but missing the last several minutes of the film.  This is the complete print.  When an old colleague is killed, Secret Agent Super-Dragon comes out of retirement to investigate a case of poisoned chewing gum that leads inexplicably to an international crime syndicate planning to take over the world with psychotropic drugs smuggled in phony Ming vases.  Starring Ray Danton, Margaret Lee, Marisa Mell, Jess Hahn, and others.  Directed by Giorgio Ferroni.  Straight from Greek pre-record.  Dubbed in English, with Greek subtitles.  (A/A-).

OPERATION: KID BROTHER  (1967)  The evil crime syndicate Thanatos is bent on taking over the world, using a magnetic wave generator that will cause all metal-based machinery to grind to a halt. However, the well-known British secret agent normally assigned to such tasks isn't available, so they engage his civilian brother, Neil, to help. Neil (played by Neil Connery) is a world-class plastic surgeon, hypnotist, and lip-reader, all of which turn out to be precisely the skills required for thwarting Thanatos.  Also stars Daniela Bianchi, Adolfo Celi, and Bernard Lee.  Directed by Alberto De Martino.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

OSS 117: FROM TOKYO WITH LOVE  (1966)  Frederick Stafford plays Hubert Bonniseur, the best secret agent this side of James Bond.  0SS 117 goes to Japan to bust an international criminal operation.  Also stars Marina Vlady, Henri Serre, and Colin Drake.  Directed by Michel Boisrond.  Straight from Greek pre-record.  Dubbed in English, with Greek subtitles.  (A/A-). 

 

OSS 117: MISSION FOR A KILLER  (1965)  Secret agent 0SS 117 tracks a dangerous drug to the jungles of the Amazon and discovers a band of neo-Nazi foreign agents planning to use it for world conquest.   After four political assassinations occur inside a month, all perpetrated by drug-induced innocents, OSS 117 is sent to Rio to track down the source of the narcotic. Since it's Rio, we are treated to the prerequisite Carnival footage but it doesn't take up too much time. The Latin-inflected score by Michel Magne is just fine and in fact, blends well with the Rio and Bahia area locations. The film has plenty of action, good fights and intentional humor. Overall this is a superior example of the genre.  Stars Frederick Stafford, Mylene Demongeot, Raymond Pellegrin, and Francois Maistre. Disguised as a ruthless killer, 'William Chandler', OSS 117 will penetrate the terrorist organization just when it is preparing the murder of Heindrich Van Dyck, the UN delegate to the Middle-East peace process. RAGAN  (1967)  Cool Euro action thriller.  A former mercenary named Ragan is approached by a man named Velludo with a $75,000 job offer. Velludo wants Ragan to fly a plane in a mission to free Moreno, the former dictator of a Caribbean island. Ragan says "no", but his plane is mysteriously destroyed in a fire and his insurance is suddenly cancelled, so "no" becomes "yes." Ragan will have to chance to meet up with an ex-flame named Janine who's also involved in the planned coup along with her husband.
