Periods of normal behavior are punctuated by violent outbursts. His wife calls for help that leads to the unorthodox detective Matthew Earp. ASSIGNMENT: TERROR  (1971)  Sci-fi/horror hybrid from Spain.  Aliens from a dying world plot to conquer earth by praying on man's superstitions. Bringing two dead scientists (Michael Rennie and Karin Dor) back to life, they use their knowledge to re-animate various earth monsters, including the werewolf Waldemar Daninsky, Frankenstein's monster (both played by Jacinto Molina), the mummy Tao-Tet, and the vampire Count de Meirhoff.  Directed by Tulio Demicheli.  Letterboxed.  Upgrade!!  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

ATROCIOUS TALES OF LOVE AND REVENGE  (1978)  Original title: "Giallo Napoletano."  Marcello Mastroianni plays a Neapolitan mandolin player. In order to pay off his father's gambling debts, he agrees to play a serenade under somebody's window in the middle of the night. Soon, he is surrounded by dead bodies and has to figure out who is behind this plot before he is either jailed or thrown out of a window himself.  Excellent giallo also starring Ornella Muti, Zeudi Araya, and others.  Directed by Sergio Corbucci.  Dubbed in English, with Greek subtitles.  (B/B-).

BLACK RIBBON FOR DEBORAH  (1974)  A young woman with psychic powers is obsessed with having a child. Even though she is unable to conceive, her desire to do so creates a supernatural force determined to fulfill her wishes.  Hard-to-locate giallo starring Bradford Dillman, Marina Malfatti, Delia Boccardo, and others.  Directed by Marcello Andrei.  Dubbed in English, with Greek subtitles.  (A-/B).

BLACK VEIL FOR LISA, A  (1969)  Original title: "La Morte Non Ha Sesso."  Nicely-done giallo from director Massimo Dallamano, which casts Luciana Paluzzi as a woman who's husband suspects she's cheating on him.  So the husband hires a hit-man to kill her, but Paluzzi ends up having an affair with the murderer- and there are plenty more plot twists where that came from.  Also stars John Mills, Robert Hoffmann, Carlo Hinterman, Enzo Fiermonte, and others.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

BLUEBEARD  (1962)  Also known as: "Landru."  Claude Chabrol directs this film based on the crimes of an infamous wife-killer.  Landru, the father of four children, contacts Parisian women through newspapers, seduces and eventually kills them in order to feed his little family.  Stars Charles Denner, Stephane Audran, Hildegard Knef, and others.  Dubbed in English.  (A/A-).

BODY, THE  1974  Prime Italian giallo filmed in the tropics.  A young man gets involved in a dangerous affair with the wife of his friend, a brutal alcoholic.  This creates havoc, and eventually the two decide to murder him.  Stars Leonard Mann, Zeudi Araya, Carroll Baker.  Directed by Luigi Scattini.  Dubbed in English.  (A/A-).

BYLETH (IL DEMONE DELL'INCESTO)  (1971)  Finally an upgraded print of this impossible-to-find gothic horror/giallo film from director Leopoldo Savona (alias Leo Coleman).  Strange mediaeval tale with undertones of demonic possession.  A killer is stalking victims in an old, dark castle.  Stars Mark Damon, Claudia Gravy, Franco Jamonte, and Aldo Bufi Landi.  Dubbed in Spanish, with no subtitles.  Upgrade!!  (B/B-).

CANDIDATE FOR A KILLING  (1968)  Spanish giallo/ suspense flick about a man who is hired to pose as an eccentric millionaire's exact look-alike.  He soon finds out why they paid big bucks, when an organization starts trying to kill him.  Anita Ekberg, John Richardson.  Directed by Jose Maria Elorrieta.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

CARNATION KILLER  (1973)  Also known as: "The Colour of Blood."  Obscure British TV horror.  A serial killer escapes from the asylum to which he has been confined. He picks a seemingly innocent woman as his next victim, but soon it looks like she's not quite as innocent as he thought.  Starring Norman Eshley, Katherine Schofield, Derek Smith, and others.  Directed by Robert Tronson.  Dubbed in English.  (B/B-).

CASA DELL'AMORE... LA POLIZIA INTERVIENE  (1978)  Translation: "House of Love... CERCO DE TERROR  (1972)  Extremely rare Spanish-Mexican giallo/thriller starring Tony Kendall, Carlos Pinar, Jose Maria Caffarel, Libertad Leblanc, Francisco Piquer, and others.  Directed by Luis Marquina.  Dubbed in Spanish, with no subtitles.  (B/B-).

CHOSEN SURVIVORS  (1974)  Excellent British ecological horror flick.  A group of diverse individuals are suddenly taken from their homes and flown via helicopter to a futuristic bomb shelter in the desert, nearly two miles below the surface of the Earth. There they learn that a nuclear holocaust is taking place and that they've been "chosen" by computer to survive in the shelter in order to continue the human race.  Starring Jackie Cooper, Alex Cord, Richard Jaeckal, and others.  Directed by Sutton Roley.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

CORONA NEGRA  (1951)  Also known as: "The Black Crown."  Atmospheric French/Spanish horror.  Set in Tangier but shot in Spain, the plot concerns a woman (Maria Felix) who loses her memory after killing her husband about to divorce her because of her affair with Maurizio (Vittorio Gassman). The dazed murderess befriended by a young engineer (Rossano Brazzi) but her lover catches up with her and forces her to reveal where her rich husband's jewels were hidden.  Directed by Luis Saslavsky.  Dubbed in Spanish, with no subtitles.  (A-/B).

CRAZE  (1973)  Also known as: "The Infernal Idol."  Great British horror yarn from director Freddie Francis.  A nutty antiques dealer performs nightly rituals in honor of the African god Chuku, whom he believes will reward him with unimaginable wealth and power if he merely offers up human sacrifice.  Starring Jack Palance, Diana Dors, Julie Ege, Suzy Kendall, and others.  In English.  (A/A-).

CRAZY DESIRES OF A MURDERER  (1974)  Original title: "I Vizi Morbosi di una Governante."  English-subtitled print of this grisly giallo, which involves a series of killings in which the victims' eyeballs are gouged out.  Starring Patrizia Gori, Corrado Gaipa, Annie Carol Edel, Gaetano Russo, and others.  Directed by Filippo Walter Ratti.  Dubbed in Italian, with English subtitles.  (B/B-).

CRIMEN DEL CAPITAN SANCHEZ, EL  (1984)  Also known as: "The Crime of Captain Sanchez."  Rare made-for-TV mystery, which takes place in the 1800's.  Sicko tries to cover up a gory axe murder.  Starring Fernando Guillen, Victoria Abril, Jose Cerro, and others.  Directed by Vicente Aranda.  Dubbed in Spanish, with no subtitles.  (A/A-).

CRIMES OF THE BLACK CAT  (1972)  Paola is a fashion model who has an affair with Peter, a blind composer. At the same time, she also has an affair with Victor, a married man. She dumps Peter and gets killed the same night under mysterious circumstances. Peter starts investigating the case but in the meanwhile a photographer gets killed. The police find pictures in his lab that show Victor and Paola in bed. DAMNED IN VENICE  (1977)  Original title: "Nero Veneziana." Uncut letterboxed print of this Italian takeoff of "Rosemary's Baby."  A blind boy receives a vision that warns him of the birth of the anti-Christ.  Low on the technical end, high on the atmosphere and suspense.  Stars Renato Cestie, Lorraine De Selle, Olga Karlatos, and others.  Directed by Ugo Liberatore.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B). 

DARK MINSTREL  (2001)  Also known as: "Tuno Negro."  Students of the university of Salamanca are brutally murdered by a black masked minstrel.  Starring Jorge Sanz, Fele Martinez, Silke, and others.  Directed by Pedro L. DARK PURPOSE  (1964)  Original title: "L'Intrigo."  In this latter-day sort-of-remake of "Jane Eyre", Shirley Jones plays an innocent young American abroad (Italy, specifically) who becomes romantically involved with the always charming Rossano Brazzi, unaware that he has a nutty wife tucked away in an attic.  Also stars George Sanders and Giorgia Moll.  Directed by Vittorio Sala.  Dubbed in English, with Swedish subtitles. DARK SECRET OF HARVEST HOME

DAY KILLER  (1974)  Original title: "5 Donne per L'Assassino."  Bogusly packaged as a John Carpenter film, this rare giallo is about a reporter who comes home from assignment to find his baby in the hospital and his wife dead. The baby isn't his, the reporter learns from his doctor friend Lydia (Pascale Rivault), as he is quite sterile. Reporter Giorgio and Lydia soon become lovers, and she narrowly escapes the brutal hands of the murderer (or murderers) who claims several other victims in shockingly violent fashion.  Directed by Stelvio Massi.  Dubbed in Italian, with no subtitles.  (B/B-).

DEADLY INHERITANCE  (1968)  Also known as: "The Killer Has Dirty Hands."  Femi Benussi stars as one of the heirs of a local drunk but very rich industrialist. When he's hit by a train, it doesn't take long for his survivors to immediately start fighting over the money. Unfortunately for them, they soon begin to die off in very mysterious but gory fashion.  Top-notch giallo from director Vittorio Sindoni.  Dubbed in English, with Greek subtitles.  (A-/B).

DEADLY TRAP  (1971)  Also known as: "Unico Indizio: Una Sciarpa Gialla."  Frank Langella plays a writer harassed into working for a nameless organization.  When he refuses, his children mysteriously vanish.  Meanwhile, his wife (played by Faye Dunaway) slowly begins losing her mind.  Watered-down horror thriller from director Rene Clement.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

DEADLY TRIANGLE  (1973)  Original title: "El Juego del Adulterio."  Rare giallo from director Joaquin Luis Romero Marchent.  A woman seeking mental help is stalked by her psychiatrist.  Starring Erika Blanc, Marisol Delgado, Juan Luis Galiardo, and others.  Dubbed in English, with Greek subtitles.  (A-/B).

DEATH CAR ON THE FREEWAY  (1979)  A woman is badly shaken when she is run off the freeway and nearly killed by a crazy van-driver.  Nobody believes her story until the van-killer strikes other individuals.  Finally, a reporter decides to go against the grain of local seedy politicians to get some answers.  Made-for-TV horror starring Shelley Hack, George Hamilton, Peter Graves, and others.  Directed by Hal Needham.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

DEATH COMES DOWN SLOWLY  (1972)  Original title: "La Morte Scende Leggera."  Rare giallo starring Stelio Candelli, Patrizia Viotti, Tom Felleghy, and others.  Directed by Leopoldo Savona.  Dubbed in Italian, with no subtitles.  (A-/B).

DEATH IN HAITI (1972)  Also known as: "Tropic of Cancer."  One of the more brutal gialli available, this one casts Anthony Steffen as a physician living in Haiti, who's discovered a formula for medicine that could cure cancer.  Sure enough, the criminal element is after his drug, and Steffen has all he can do to guard it from their greedy hands.  Matters are complicated when an old friend (played by Gabriele Tinti) comes to visit him, soon after which a killer enters the scene.  Some rather grisly deaths follow, in which the murderer takes morbid delight in putting his victims through as much pain as possible.  Also stars Anita Strindberg, Umberto Raho, Stelio Candelli, and others.  Directed by Edoardo Mulargia.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

DEATH KNOCKS TWICE  (1969)  Also known as: "La Morte Bussa Due Volte."  Stylish giallo from director Harald Phillip, about a series of murders occurring at and near a posh hotel resort.  Lots of elaborate plot twists and red herrings, all done in the Edgar Wallace tradition.  An Italian-German co-production.  Starring Dean Reed, Fabio Testi, Anita Ekberg, Adolfo Celi, Werner Peters, and others.  Dubbed in English.  (B/B-).

DEATH SMILES AT MURDER  (1973)  Klaus Kinski is a doctor who discovers an ancient Incan formula for raising the dead, and uses it for a series of revenge murders.  Very strange, atmospheric, giallo-like film from director Aristide Massaccesi.  Also stars Angela Bo, Ewa Aulin, Giacomo Rossi-Stuart, and Luciano Rossi.  Dubbed in English.  (A/A-). 

DEATH STEPS IN THE DARK  (1977)  Original title: "Passi di Morte Perduti nel Buio."  Excellent giallo from director Maurizio Pradeaux.  An Italian reporter is traveling on the Instanbul-Athens train. A woman is murdered with the reporter's letter-opener, so that makes him the main suspect. With the help of his Swedish girlfriend he starts investigating in order to prove his innocence, and find out who the real killer is.  Stars Leonard Mann, Robert Webber, Vera Krouska, and others.  Dubbed in English, with Dutch subtitles.  (A-/B).

DEATH TRAIN  (1978)  Australian horror, which you have to see if you missed it!  An insurance investigator, checking into the death of a man run over by a train in his back yard, uncovers a web of murder, land fraud swindles and supernatural beings.  Starring Hugh Keays-Byrne, Max Meldrum, and others.  Directed by Igor Auzins.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

DEATH WALKS IN HIGH HEELS  (1972)  Original title: "La Morte Cammina con i Tracchi Alti."  Rare English-language print of this giallo from director Luciano Ercoli.  A famed jewel thief named Rochard is slashed to death on a train. His daughter Nicole, a famous nightclub performer in Paris, is questioned by the police about some missing diamonds but she claims to know nothing. Nicole is then terrorized by a masked man with piercing blue eyes who demands to know where her father has hidden the stolen diamonds. Suspecting that her jealous boyfriend Michel may be the man who is harassing her, Nicole and her new-found friend Dr. Robert Matthews escape to England and apparent safety. DEMON IS ON THE ISLAND  (1983)  French horror about doctor who arrives on an island to be confronted with mystery and a disturbing colleague.  Domestic appliances go crazy, and people are disfigured, maimed, burned--you name it.  Starring Anny Duperey, Jean-Claude Brialy, and others.  Directed by Francis Leroi.  Dubbed in French, with English subtitles. DEVIL IN THE BRAIN  (1972)  Original title: "Il Diavolo Nel Cervello."  Rare horror oddity, which concerns a child who murders his father.  After being committed to a psychiatric clinic, the doctor pronounces the child in perfect health.  But the doctor has had a previous affair with the mother...  The plot gets weirder as the film progresses.  Stars Micheline Presle, Keir Dullea, and others.  Directed by Sergio Bergonzelli.  Dubbed in Italian, with English subtitles.  But fair/poor quality only.  (C/C-).

DEVIL'S WEDDING NIGHT  (1973)  Original title: "Il Plenilunio delle Vergini."  Great horror starring Mark Damon, Rosalba Neri, Esmeralda Barros, and others.  Lady Dracula uses Dracula's ring to lure beautiful girls to her castle, where she murders them so she can bathe in their blood.  Directed by Luigi Batzella.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

DR. COOK'S GARDEN  (1971)  Atmospheric and well-directed TV horror.  A young doctor returns to his New England home town after a long absence. He visits with the town's kindly old physician, Dr. Cook.
