AFRICA ADVENTURE  (1954)  Newspaper columnist, war correspondent, globetrotter and novelist Robert C. Ruark takes a leave of absence on goes on an African Safari. This documentary shows Africa as it actually was in 1954. The safari proceeds from Nairobi in Kenya, British East Africa and continues to the northern frontier while meeting natives, lingering over their customs and going on to hunt big game.  This disc also includes the 1955 film, "African Manhunt."  Recommended!! AMAZON DEATH TRAP  (1974)  Also known as: "Miracles Still Happen."  A seventeen-year-old girl is the sole survivor of a plane crash in the Amazon.  As she heads down the river in search of help, she must battle against all kinds of dangers: wild animals, venomous snakes, deadly insects, and more!  Highly recommended entry starring Susan Penhaligon, Graziella Galvani, Paul Muller, and others.  Directed by Giuseppe Maria Scotese.  Dubbed in English.  (B/B-).

BRING 'EM BACK ALIVE  (1933)  Also known as: "Frank Buck's Bring 'Em Back Alive."  American animal trapper Frank Buck travels with Ali, his "number one boy," on an expedition into the Malayan jungle, to catch big game.  A peculiarity, he only uses his rifle in self defense, not to hunt.  Great semi-documentary adventure narrated by Frank Buck himself.  Directed by Clyde E. CANNIBAL ATTACK  (1954)  Also known as: "I Divoratori della Giungla."  Great jungle adventure film, and part of the long-running "Jungle Jim" series.  Johnny Weissmuller, acting under his own name, fights enemy agents who are trying to steal cobalt while disguised as crocodiles.  Also starring Judy Walsh, David Bruce, Bruce Cowling, and others.  Directed by Lee Sholem.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

CAPTIVE GIRL  (1950)  Another entry in the "Jungle Jim" series.  In this one, the hero is out to save Joan from a sinister witch doctor, whilst simultaneously fighting evil treasure hunter Barton.  Starring Johnny Weismuller, Buster Crabbe, Anita Ljoest, and others.  Directed by William A. CHINA CORSAIR  (1951)  Good drama/adventure which casts Jon Hall as an unemployed seaman who gets forced by criminals into exporting a valuable cargo of Ming artifacts out of China so they be exchanged for cash.  Also stars Ernest Borgnine, Lisa Ferraday, John Dehner, and others.  Directed by Ray Nazarro.  In English.  (A-/B).

 

CONGO CROSSING  (1956)  Also known as: "Congo."  Woman fleeing a French murder charge escapes to African jungle.  Resident hit-man is paid to kill her.  Great adventure thriller starring Virginia Maya, George Nader, Peter Lorre, Michael Pate, Rex Ingram, and others.  Directed by Joseph Pevney.  Dubbed in English.  (A/A-).

CURUCU, BEAST OF THE AMAZON  (1956)  Also known as: "Kurussu, la Bestia delle Amazzoni."  Color print of this scarce jungle adventure from director Curt Siodmak.  Explorers travel up the Amazon River to find out why the plantation workers have left their work in panic, allegedly because of attacks from Curucu, a monster who is said to live up the river where no white man has ever been before.  Starring John Bromfield, Beverly Garland, Tom Payne, Harvey Chalk, and others.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

DRUMS OF TAHITI  (1953)  Also known as: "Tamburi a Tahiti."  Great South Seas adventure from director William Castle.  An American living in 19th-century Tahiti gets involved in intrigue against the French colonial government.  Starring Dennis O'Keefe, Patricia Medina, Francis L. FACE OF EVE, THE  (1968)  Also known as: "Eve."  A hunting expedition in the Amazon jungle comes across a beautiful princess who is able to keep her tribe in line using her psychic powers. GREEN HELL  (1940)  A group of adventurers head into a South American jungle in search of Inca treasure.  Although they locate the treasure, they are attacked by headhunters.  Adventure starring Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Joan Bennett, Alan Hale, John Howard, and more.  Directed by James Whale.  In English.  (A-/B).

GUNGALA, VIRGIN OF THE JUNGLE  (1967)  Also known as: "La Virgine della Giungla."  Good jungle thrills starring Kitty Swan, Linda Veras, Poldo Bendandi, Conrad Loth, Archie Savage, and others.  Directed by Romano Ferrara.  Dubbed in English, with Dutch subtitles.  (B/B-).

JUNGLE GIRL AND THE SLAVER  (1957)  Sequel to "Liane the Jungle Goddess."  A government agent is sent to Africa to find Liane, the only person capable of bringing the local tribes together to make a stand against the vicious slave trade.  However, Liane is captured by Ibrahim, an Arab aristocrat who is in fact the head of the whole operation.  Stars Marion Michael, Adrian Hoven, Rik Battaglia, Nerio Bernardi, Marisa Merlini, and others.  Directed by Hermann Leitner.  Dubbed in English.  (B/B-).

JUNGLE HELL  (1956)  A doctor is sent into the jungle to investigate reports of burnings rocks, flying saucers, and other mysterious phenomena.  He is aided by a native boy who leads him to a strange cult living deep in the jungle.  Starring Sabu, David Bruce, K.T. KALI YUG, GODDESS OF VENGEANCE  (1963)  Original title: "Kali Yug, La Dea Della Vendetta."   Jungle adventure starring Paul Guers, Senta Berger, Lex Barker, Klaus Kinski, and Sergio Fantoni.  Directed by Mario Camerini.  Dubbed in Italian, with no subtitles.  Note: soundtrack has slight buzz.  (B/B-).

KING OF KONG ISLAND  (1968)  Also known as: "Eva, La Venere Selvaggia." A group of mad scientists travel to Kong Island where they implant receptors into the brains of gorillas planning to create a gorilla war for world domination. Out to break a few heads is a descendant of King Kong.  Brad Harris, Esmeralda Barros, Adriana Alban, Mark Farran, Paolo Magalotti, and others.  Directed by Roberto Mauri.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

LIANE, THE JUNGLE GODDESS  (1956)  An expedition discovers blonde 16 year-old Liane venerated by the native tribe in the African jungle and returns her to Hamburg where she is welcomed by her grandfather, ship tycoon Von Amelongen. His nephew Schoening, present head of the firm and prospective heir, tries all to stop his uncle from acknowledging her, including perjury, destruction of evidence, and finally resorting to murder. He dies in an accident driving his car into the river in his flight from the police. There is a subplot around a love quadrangle centered around Thoren, who is secretly loved by biologist Jacqueline who is in turn courted by Hungarian Tibor. Thoren plays paternal protector to Liane before succumbing to her youthful charm and returning with her to the jungle.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

LUANA, DAUGHTER OF THE JUNGLE  (1968)  Rare jungle outing from director Roberto Infascelli.  Glenn Saxson plays an African explorer who joins up with a lovely female to discover the mystery behind a certain exotic drug.  While in the jungles, they discover an illegal narcotics operation, and a giant carnivorous plant that devours the natives!  Meanwhile, they must avoid the treachery of a criminal mastermind who has joined the expedition.  Evi Marandi, Pietro Tordi, Raf Baldassarre.  Dubbed in English.  Upgrade!!  (A-/B).

MISTERIO DEL TEMPIO INDIANO, IL  (1963)  Sequel to "Kali Yug, Goddess of Vengeance." MYSTERY OF THUG ISLAND, THE  (1964)  Also known as: "Snake Hunter Strangler."  Three year old Ada, daughter of the British captain McPherson, is captured by the Indian Thug sect to represent the incarnation of Kali. Ever hidden in a vast underground system of caverns, she watches over human sacrifices, doubting her vocation. 15 years have passed when her father finally finds her and attempts a rescue, together with a snake-hunter who has fallen in love with her. PIRATE SHIP  (1949)  Also known as: "The Mutineers."  Sam Katzman produced this pirate-oriented crime thriller starring Jon Hall, George Reeves, and Adele Jergens.  Criminals murder a ship captain and take their gang aboard the ship, holding the crew as hostage.  The first mate works secretly to thwart their plans.  Directed by Jean Yarbrough.  In English.  (A-/B).

RAIDERS OF THE DESERT  (1941)  Richard Arlen and Andy Devine play two good-for-nothings who embark on the wrong ship and end up in Arabia, where they find themselves in the middle of a civil war.  B-grade adventure co-starring Maria Montez, Linda Hayes, Lewis Howard, and more.  Directed by John Rawlins.  In English.  (B/B-).

ROYAL AFRICAN RIFLES  (1953)  Great adventure tale set in 1914.  Louis Hayward plays an undercover British officer commissioned by the government to investigate the theft of Vickers machine guns stolen from a British warship.  Since the thieves transported the firearms into the jungle, in he goes.  Co-stars Veronica Hurst, Michael Pate, Angela Greene, and others.  Directed by Lesley Selander.  In English.  (A/A-).

QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE  (1935)  An expedition sets off for the last land of Mu, where legend has it that a killer death ray is emitted from the eye of a golden idol.  Nice twelve-chapter serial starring Reed Howes, Mary Kornman, Lafe McKee, George Chesebro, and others.  Directed by Robert F. Hill.  On two discs. Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

SAMOA, QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE  (1968)  Clint Lomas (played by Roger Browne) is hired by a Hong Kong business outfit to lead an expedition into the African jungle, to search for a legendary diamond mine.  They find that the mine is in the hands of a fierce tribe of natives, headed by a lovely white queen (Edwige Fenech) who falls in love with Lomas just long enough to allow him and his partners to make off with the goods.  Also stars Ivy Holzer, Ivano Staccioli, Andrea Aureli, Tullio Altamura, Umberto Ceriani, Wilbert Bradley, and Ivan Basta.  Directed by Guido Malatesta.  Dubbed in Italian, with no subtitles.  (A/A-).

SANDOKAN AGAINST THE LEOPARD OF SARAWAK  (1964)  Also known as: "Throne of Vengeance."  Lord Brooks (played by Mario Petri) kidnaps the fiancée of Sandokan (Ray Danton) and keeps her hidden in an underground cavern.  Sandokan attempts to rescue her, but she has been brainwashed and hypnotized by the local witch doctor.  Also stars Guy Madison, Franca Bettoia, Alberto Farnese, Mino Doro, and Aldo Bufi Landi.  Directed by Luigi Capuano.  Upgrade!!  Dubbed in English.  (A/A-).

 

SANDOKAN: THE EPIC STORY  (1976)  This colossal four-hour production is often considered by far the best rendition of the Sandokan story.  It traces the rise of a Malaysian hero who, embittered by the plundering and invasive Englishmen, decides to take a stand against them and restore the liberty of the Malaysian people.  Aided by his best friend Yanez, a Portuguese renegade, Sandokan wages a bloody and nonstop war against the forces of Lord Brooks, his main enemy.  Starring Kabir Bedi, Philippe Leroy, Adolfo Celi, Carol Andre, and others.  Directed by Sergio Sollima.  Counts as two titles.  Dubbed in English, with Dutch subtitles.  (A-/B).

 

SANDOKAN FIGHTS BACK  (1964)  Original title: "Sandokan Alla Riscossa."  A Malaysian prince's parents are put to the sword by the sadistic Englishman Lord Brooks.  Years later, the prince rallies his forces to take revenge.  Stars Ray Danton, Mario Petri, Guy Madison, Mino Doro, Alberto Farnese, and Raf Baldassarre.  Directed by Luigi Capuano.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

SANDOKAN: THE TWO TIGERS (1941)  Original title: "Le Due Tigri."  Extremely rare 'Sandokan' film from director Giorgio Simonelli.  Tremal Naik's daughter is kidnapped by the thugs and secluded in a temple in the jungle. The religious sect want her to become the priestess of the goddess Kali. Sandokan, however, aided by his trustee friends, sets out to rescue her.  Starring Luigi Pavese, Massimo Girotti, Sandro Ruffini, Alanova, Cesare Fantoni, and others.  Dubbed in Italian, with no subtitles.  (B/B-).

SERPENT ISLAND  (1954)  An office secretary from Scranton, Pennsylvania (Rosalind Hayes) sets out to find her great-grandfather's hidden treasure.  Color adventure also featuring Sonny Tufts, Tom Munroe, Mary Munday, and others.  Directed by Tom Gries.  Dubbed in English.  (A/A-).

SHARK RIVER  (1953)  Also known as: "Fuga Nella Palude."  Lost tropic adventure tale.  Clay Webley (Warren Stevens) returns to Florida from the Civil War with the law after him, and his brother (played by Steve Cochran) agrees to lead him and his wounded friend (Robert Cunningham), through the Everglades to the Gulf of Mexico, with Cuba as their final destination. The dying man reveals that Clay has murdered a man. The brothers slog through the swamp fighting off alligators, snakes and the plot and come upon a widow (Carole Mathews) and her son.  She agrees to let them stay when Clay is bitten by a poisonous snake, and a romance develops between her and Dan, while the recovering Clay plots a few schemes of his own.  Directed by John Rawlins. SMUGGLER'S ISLAND  (1951)  An American adventurer is hired by a wealthy couple to smuggle $200,000 worth of gold from Macao to Hong Kong.  Besides being chased by corrupt customs officials, they are pursued by a local crime boss who wants his share of the loot.  Starring Jeff Chandler, Evelyn Keyes, Philip Friend, and others.  Directed by Edward Ludwig.  In English.  (B/B-).

SONG OF INDIA  (1949)  Good jungle adventure, which stars Sabu as a jungle prince who lords over the wild beasts, provoking the fury of Turhan Bey who leads a government-approved hunting expedition into the Indian wilderness.  Also starring Gail Russell, Anthony Caruso, Aminta Dyne, and others.  Directed by Albert S. TAM TAM MAYUMBE  (1955)  Rare jungle adventure which was hacked apart by U.S. distributors and released under the title "Mondo Keazunt." A doctor and his retinue explore savage jungles in the region of the Congo.  They are met with opposition from the natives, and are in constant peril from snakes, piranhas, wild beasts, and unfriendly hunters.  Starring Marcello Mastroianni, Paul Muller, Jacques Berthier, Charles Vanel, and others.  Directed by Gian Gaspare Napolitano.  Dubbed in Italian, with no subtitles.  (A-/B).

TARZAN AND THE BROWN PRINCE  (1972)  Also known as: "Tarzan and the Rainbow."  Great jungle adventure starring Steve Hawkes, Kitty Swan, Peter Lee Lawrence, Angel del Pozo, Agata Flori, and others.  Directed by Manuel Cano.  Dubbed in English, with Dutch subtitles.  (B/B-).

TARZAN: MYSTERY OF THE JUNGLE  (1973)  Also known as: "The Green Inferno."  A government operation sends agents posing as missionaries deep into the African jungle to locate the source of illegal arms shipments to the natives.  They discover a Tarzan-like man living in the forest, who may be able to help.  Decent Spanish jungle outing starring Richard Yestaran, Cesar Burner, Didi Sherman, and Julian Ugarte.  Directed by Miguel Iglesias Bonns.  Dubbed in English, with Swedish subtitles.  (B/B-).

TARZAK AGAINST THE LEOPARD MEN  (1964)  A Tarzan-type jungle warrior tries to save a safari from being attacked by a tribe of Leopard Men. Starring Ralph Hudson, Rita Klein, Nuccia Cardinali, Archie Savage , and others.  Directed by Carlo Veo.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

TARZANA THE WILD GIRL  (1969)  Original title: "Tarzana, Sesso Selvaggio."  A plane crashes deep in the African jungle. Years later, an expedition comes across a beautiful white girl who is living wild in the jungle, and who may be a survivor of that plane crash.  Guido Malatesta directs this jungle action film starring Ken Clark, Femi Benussi, Franca Polesello, Raf Baldassarre, Franco Ressel, Andrea Aureli, Furio Meniconi, and others.  Upgrade!!  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

TEMPLE OF A THOUSAND LIGHTS  (1965)  Also known as: "La Montagna di Luce."  Umberto Lenzi directs this excellent Victorian-era jungle adventure, which casts Richard Harrison as a jewel thief commissioned by an Indian Rajah to track down a priceless jewel.  Also starring Luciana Gilli, Daniele Vargas, Wilbert Bradley, and others.  Dubbed in English, with Spanish subtitles.  (B/B-). 

THREE SERGEANTS OF BENGAL  (1965)  Three good-for-nothing redcoats are commissioned by the British army to bring aid to Fort Madras, a remote Indian outpost being harassed by a bandit named Sikki Dama (Aldo Sambrell).  Along the way, they are attacked by elephants, ambushed by headhunters, and imprisoned by a band of religious fanatics!  Great jungle adventure starring Richard Harrison, Ugo Sasso, Nazzareno Zamperla, Wandisa Guida, Andrea Bosic, Luz Marquez, and others.  Directed by Umberto Lenzi.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

TIGRI DI MOMPRACEM, LE  (1970)  Sandokan (played by Ivan Rassimov) strives defeat the forces of Lord Brooks and restore the Malaysian people to their natural sovereignty.  Although containing a good amount of footage filched from the two Lenzi entries, this film still provides the viewer with some fresh, original material, including Sandokan's monumental first meeting with Yanez.  Also starring Claudia Gravy, Andrea Bosic, Luis Davila, and others.  Directed by Mario Sequi.  Letterboxed.  Dubbed in Italian, with no subtitles.  (A-/B).

TREASURE OF BENGAL, THE  (1953)  Original title: 'Tesoro Di Begala."  Portuguese slave traders invade India during the 1600's.  During the capturing of all the men, women, and children they can get their hands on, they hear of the existence of an enormous gem hidden in a sacred temple.  One of the Indian leaders is bribed into revealing its whereabouts, but a young hunter, Ainur, sets out to stop the desecration before the explorers can get to it.  Stars Luigi Tosi, Sabu, Carla Calo, Luisa Boni, and Nino Marchetti.  Directed by Gianni Vernuccio.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

ZAMBO, KING OF THE JUNGLE  (1972)  Brad Harris plays a prisoner wrongfully convicted of murder.  After breaking out of the hoosegow he hides out in the jungle.  Later, when explorers enter the area looking for diamonds, they find "Zambo" as king/ guru/ game master of the whole country.  Rare jungle adventure also starring Attilio Dottesio, Raf Baldassarre, Daniele Vargas, and Gisela Hahn.  Directed by Adalberto Albertini.  Straight from pre-record.  Dubbed in English, with Greek subtitles.  (A/A-).

ZAN, KING OF THE JUNGLE  (1970)  Outrageous Spanish-Italian Tarzan rip-off from director Manuel Cano.  Zan (played by Steve Hawkes) is a white man who happens to be king of the jungle.  But the black natives want him dead, so they can get after the treasure of the Amazons.  Zan befriends the Amazon queen (Kitty Swan), who tells him the secret of the treasure.  Later, Zan is shot by one of the blacks, but is saved by an old gold prospector.  Zan repays him with some of the gold, but when the old man returns to town the jealousy of some locals are incited, and they kill him to find out where the gold is hidden.  Matters are further complicated when the prospector's daughter shows up, to find her father and bring him back to civilization.  But the criminals have set their eyes on her as well..  Also starring Antonio Casas, Jesus Puente, Fernando Sancho, Krista Nell, and others.  Written by Umberto Lenzi.  Dubbed in English, with Greek subtitles.  (A/A-).
