MESSALINA (1951) Also known as: "The Affairs of Messalina." At last, we received a print of this extremely rare peplum from veteran director Carmine Gallone. Nearly two hours long, it tells the tale of Messalina, the emperor Claudius' adulterous wife, who upsets the throne by plotting treason against the emperor with a young soldier named Silvius (played by Georges Marchal). The Christians, of course, are implicated, and the end scenes depict plenty of gladiatorial action. Also starring Memo Benassi, Delia Scala, Erno Crisa, and others. MONDO BALORDO (1964) Boris Karloff unlocks man's oldest secrets and exposes the hidden intimate shocking scenes of love... around Our Crazy World! I saw this one at the late, lamented Mid-City Outdoor Theatre in 1964 (it closed in 1984) and at the time there were a number of films copycatting the wildly-successful "Mondo Cane" ("A Dog's World"). For the uninitiated, these are anthology documentaries of the offbeat, bizarre, and often even disgusting, all supposedly genuine, with an unseen narrator (in this case, Boris Karloff, who's great in anything), and a musical score. MONOCLE, THE (1964) Original title: "Le Monocle Rit Jaune." French spy thriller. A secret agent goes after a gang of Asian terrorists who are out to destroy an American nuclear aircraft carrier. Here's a film that is rather unusual, with lots of action and a strange type of humor that only the French seem to understand.
