BLUE ISLAND  (1982)  Original title: "Due Gocce D'Acqua Salata."  Italian-lensed cheeseball, which is essentially a rip-off of "The Blue Lagoon."  Two teens (Sabrina Siani and Fabio Meyer) get stranded on a desert island where they learn to fend for themselves.  While loving it up, they  discover they're not alone, as hulking goon (Mario Padone) seeks to shares their slice of paradise with them.  Directed by Luigi Russo and Enzo Doria.  Dubbed in English, with Swedish subtitles.  (A-/B).

CAPTAIN FABIAN  (1950)  Also known as: "Adventures of Captain Fabian."  Unusual costume suspense/drama set in 1860 New Orleans.  Errol Flynn plays a sea captain who gets amorously involved with a Creole girl he rescues from a rigged trial.  Meanwhile, she becomes entangled with a seedy aristocrat (played by Vincent Price) who tries to frame Fabian for murder.  Micheline Presle, Agnes Moorehead, Howard Vernon, and others star.  Directed by William Marshall.  In English.  (A/A-).

CARNIVAL OF CRIME  (1962)  This grainy old crime thriller features a number of continental actors, though it's really a Brazilian-Argentinian production with an American director.  Architect returns home from a business trip, only to find that his wife has disappeared.  A search reveals that she has been murdered.  Police soon suspect him of the crime.  Jean-Pierre Aumont, Luis Davila, Alberto Dalbes, and Tonia Carrero, star.  Directed by George Cahan.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

CRY OF THE HUNTED  (1953)  Here's a rare treat.  Vittorio Gassman gets top billing in this dark American crime drama, playing a desperate criminal who gets tracked through the Louisiana swamps by a police lieutenant (Barry Sullivan) and a backwoods sheriff.  As they try to catch their man, a conflict of personalities comes into play.  Also starring Polly Bergen, William Conrad, Robert Burton, and more.  Directed by Joseph H. MEAN  (1977)  Fast-paced Italian gangster film directed by and starring Fred Williamson as a guy who gets sent to Rome to kill off a wimpy but ruthless mafia boss (Lou Castel) who has taken his crime agenda too far.  The various "families" have actually hired Mr. Mean to do the job.  However, before he can get too far, his target hires another hit-man to take care of him.  Great action which also features Raimund Harmstorf, Charles Borromel, and others; PLUS an original soundtrack by the Ohio Players.  Dubbed in English.  (A/A-).

NIGHTS OF LUCRETIA BORGIA, THE (1958)  Rare costume drama starring Belinda Lee as the titular character, a ruthless duchess whose lust for power knows no limits.  Also stars Jacques Sernas, Arnoldo Foa, and Michele Mercier.  Directed by Sergio Grieco.  This letterboxed print is dubbed in French, with no subtitles.  (B/B-).

SAMSON AND THE SLAVE QUEEN  (1963)  Upgrade!!  Letterboxed theatrical version of this scarce costume swashbuckler featuring Alan Steel and Pierre Brice.  Print looks like it came from the same old 16mm reels, but this English-language version is a marked improvement over our previous copy.  Directed by Umberto Lenzi.  Dubbed in English.  (B/B-).

SASSO IN BOCCA, IL  (1969)  Strange documentary about mafia-related murders and violence.  Some stock footage thrown in, and a fair amount of controversial matter, though it's hard to tell how much of the film is staged.  Directed by Giuseppe Ferrara.  Dubbed in Italian, with no subtitles.  (B/B-).

SHADOW OF THE EAGLE  (1950)  Russian-themed costume adventure.  Catherine of Russia sends Count Orlov on a secret mission to Venice to abduct a princess laying claim to the royal throne.  Once he gets there, however, he finds the woman hard to resist.  Starring Richard Greene, Valentina Cortese, Greta Gynt, Binnie Barnes, and others.  Directed by Sidney Salkow.  In English.  (A/A-).

SIGN OF THE GLADIATOR (1959)  Original title: "Nel Segno di Roma."  Hard-to-find (especially in English) Italian sword-and-sandal epic, which casts Anita Ekberg as Queen Zenobia, who revolts against the Roman empire  --  but inadvertently falls in love with Marcus Valerius (played by Georges Marchal), a Roman consul.  Also stars Folco Lulli, Chelo Alonso, Gino Cervi.  Directed by Guido Brignone.  This letterboxed print is in softish quality, but still quite watchable.  Dubbed in Italian, with English subtitles.  (B/B-).

SON OF DRACULA  (1974)  This cheap British-made horror outing has been categorized as a "musical vampire comedy."  In reality, it is a semi-serious shlockfest with some rock music thrown in.  Harry Nilsson plays a half-human, half-vampire count who wishes to undergo an operation to make him fully human.  Dr. Van Helsing is willing to perform the surgery, but the evil Baron Frankenstein has other plans for him.  Also featuring Ringo Starr, Dennis Price, Suzanna Leigh, Freddie Jones, and others.  Directed by Freddie Francis.  Dubbed in English.  (B/B-).

TARZAN: MYSTERY OF THE JUNGLE  (1973)  Also known as: "The Green Inferno."  A government operation sends agents posing as missionaries deep into the African jungle to locate the source of illegal arms shipments to the natives.  They discover a Tarzan-like man living in the forest, who may be able to help.  Decent Spanish jungle outing starring Richard Yestaran, Cesar Burner, Didi Sherman, and Julian Ugarte.  Directed by Miguel Iglesias Bonns.  Dubbed in English, with Swedish subtitles.  (B/B-).

THREE MUSKETEERS, THE  (1950)  All but forgotten made-for-TV version of this classic costume adventure, starring Robert Clarke as D'Artagnan.  Also featuring John Hubbard, Mel Archer, Paul Cavanagh, and Marjorie Lord.  This film originally appeared as an early installment of the "Magnavox Theatre" program.  Ah, the early days of television.  In English.  (A/A-).  Note: This title has been double-billed on one disc with "Black Diamonds" (1940), starring Richard Arlen and Andy Devine.

ZORRO  (1975)  Ok, here's another Zorro film for you  --  this one directed by Duccio Tessari, and starring Alain Delon!  The newly arrived governor of an oppressed province poses as an indecisive weakling, while he secretly dons the mask of "El Zorro" to rid the land of tyranny.  Also stars Ottavia Piccolo, Enzo Cerusico, and Giacomo Rossi-Stuart.  Dubbed in French, with English subtitles.  (A/A-).

ZORRO AT THE COURT OF ENGLAND  (1969)  This Fortunato Misiano production was rather a late-comer in the long fiesta of costume adventure pics released during the 50's and 60's.  Spiros Focas is a suave Spanish nobleman by day, and masked avenger by night.  Also starring Dada Gallotti, Franco Ressell, and Massimo Carocci.  Directed by Franco Montemurro.  Credits appear in English, but alas, the print is dubbed in Spanish with no subtitles.  (B/B-).
