ALONE AGAINST ROME (1962) A Roman Consul, on his way to fight a border war, stations a garrison of soldiers in a provincial town. The townspeople aren't happy with this situation but decide it's in their best interests to cooperate. However, the Tribune left in charge of the garrison proves to be cruel and demanding. He takes over a house for his own use and forces his attentions on Fabiola, the owner's daughter. She reluctantly submits in order to protect the life of her lover, Brenno, who's already been publicly whipped and who's been hauled off to the local arena to provide sport for Roman gladiators. DAMON AND PYTHIAS (1962) Also known as: "The Tyrant of Syracuse." However, he's allowed to return to Athens to visit his ailing wife. His friend, Damon, volunteers to be a hostage to guarantee his return. Marcus Valerius (played by Lang Jeffries) a soldier serving under Nero, has been entrusted by the Roman government to persecute and capture the Christians. However, he finds that the woman he loves (Cristina Gaioni) is a Christian. Helping her to escape, he is arrested and condemned to fight in the arena. HERCULES THE AVENGER (1965) Original title: "La Sfida Dei Giganti." Due to the vengeance wrought by Gea, goddess of the Earth, Hercules (Reg Park) makes a journey into the underworld to save his son. At the same time the son of Gea stays on Earth, masquerading as Hercules and terrorizing the population. When Hercules' succeeds in rescuing his son, he manages to do some avenging of his own. IN THE SHADOW OF EAGLES (1966) After the death of Octavian, the rebel populations of Illyria and Pannonia pose a grave threat to the Roman Empire. These include Magdus's own daughter Helen, betrothed to cruel Illyrian warrior Batone who has killed many Romans. JULIUS CAESAR VS. THE PIRATES (1962) Julius Caesar (Gustavo Rojo) flees Rome because of a conspiracy against him and takes refuge by the king of Bithynia. He finds a woman there and while he escorts her to Rhodes their ship sinks. Saved by the pirates he asks for help to get back to Rome. However, the chief of the pirates (Gordon Mitchell) charges a ransom for their release, and Caesar is forced to return to Rome to collect the money. There, he falls in love with Hilde, Sveno's cousin, who's been betrothed against her will to the Danish king. Harald must devise a new plan when Guntar is captured by Sveno and when the real Danish ambassador arrives on the scene. However, when Augustus invades Egypt with his legions, she must make her choice, as Marc Anthony send his forces out to risk all for her. LION OF THEBES (1964) Aryan (Mark Forest) is a bodyguard who has saved the life of Helen of Troy (a delicious portrayal by the ever-beautiful Yvonne Furneaux) as the Greeks sack the fabled city. Their flight leads them to the deserts of Egypt and finally to Thebes. There Pharoah Ramses goes mad for Helen and decides his intended bride (the wonderful Rosalba Neri) is no longer good enough for him. There is much court intrigue, an assassination, which naturally culminates in Helen being blamed for the whole mess. The true guilty parties attempt to put her to death but Aryan saves the day. This film could have used several hundred more extras but everything considered is not a bad peplum at all. Mark Forest considered this his best film and he certainly is good. As a retaliation, Mathos (played by Jacques Sernas) steals the sacred veil from the temple of Tanit. But he soon falls in love with the temple's priestess (Jeanne Valerie). Meanwhile, General Hamilcar is sent by Carthage to wipe out the mercenaries. The big battle pieces come into play. But which side will the priestess be on?
