URANIUM CONSPIRACY, THE  (1978)  Original title: "Yellowcake: Operazione Urano."  A thrilling espionage adventure in the James Bond manner. A secret agent and a mercenary soldier prevent precious ore from falling into enemy hands. URSUS, SON OF HERCULES  (1960)  Also known as: "Ursus."  Ursus (played by Ed Fury) returns from war to find his fiancée, Attea, has been kidnapped by a mysterious sect which sacrifices virgins to its patron goddess. Ursus faces much treachery and is forced to display much courage and strength as he and the blind girl Doreide embark upon a quest to retrieve Attea.  Also stars Moira Orfei, Cristina Gaioni, and Mary Marlon.  Directed by Carlo Campogalliani.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

USTED PUEDE SER UN ASESINO  (1961)  Rare Spanish crime/ comedy which looks like an attempt to cash in on the Italian "Franco and Ciccio" films.  Two nutballs get involved in a murder investigation.  Starring Elena Balduque, Alberto Closas, Diana Lorys, and others.  Directed by Jose Maria Forque.  Dubbed in Spanish, with no subtitles.  (A-/B).

VACACIONES DE TERROR  (1989)  Rene Cardona III directs this Mexican-produced horror flick, about a family going on vacation to their new bought country house, unsuspecting of the horrible things which are going to happen.  Stars Pedro Fernandez, Julio Aleman, and others.  Dubbed in Spanish, with no subtitles.  (A-/B).

VAHSI KAN  (1983)  Turkish ripoff of "Rambo: First Blood."  Lots of violence, action, car chases, etc.  Starring Cuneyt Arkin and others.  Directed by Cetin Inanc.  Dubbed in Turkish, with no subtitles.  (B/B-).

VALLEY OF THE DOOMED  (1974)  Original title: "El Valle de los Miserables."  Rare exploitation oddity from director Rene Cardona Jr., which looks to take place sometime in the 1800's. Folks are imprisoned by sadistic plantation owners.  Starring Mario Almada, Hugo Stiglitz, Anna Luisa Peluffo, Rene Cardona, and others.  Dubbed in Spanish, with Dutch subtitles.  (B/B-).

VALLEY OF THE DRAGONS  (1961)  Algeria 1881. Two men, Michael Denning and Hector Servadac are having a duel with one another when a comet passes the earth at low altitude. The strong wind this creates transports the two men to the moon. They find themselves in a jungle inhabited by reptiles and prehistoric humans. Trying to adapt to the dangers, they each find a girl to spend time with, awaiting the next return of the comet to take them back to Earth.  Starring Cesare Danova, Sean McClory, Joan Staley, and others.  Directed by Edward Bernds.  Upgrade!!  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

VENGEANCE OF DR. MABUSE, THE  (1972)  Original title: "La Venganza del Dr. Mabuse."  Doctor Mabuse strikes again in this beautifully-shot movie made by Jess Franco at the height of his career. This one has about everything you can expect from a Spanish late night masterpiece: the evil doctor and his mindless Frankenstein-like monster, Monica Swinn as the evil sidekick, a cameo by a screaming and cigar smoking Franco, and more.  Dubbed in Spanish, with no subtitles.  (A-/B).

VENGEANCE OF THE THUGS  (1953)  Also known as: "Black Devils Of Kali."  A young hunter, Tremal-Naik (played by Lex barker), must rescue his lover Ada (Fiorella Mari) from a demonic religious sect hidden in the jungle.  Out to help him is the girl's father, an English general.  Also stars Luigi Tosi, Paul Muller, Enzo Fiermonte, Carla Calo, and Franco Balducci.  Directed by Gianpaolo Callegari.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

VENOM: SPIDER FOREST  (1971)  British horror tale.  A Nazi scientist and a woman known as a "spider goddess" attempt to develop a nerve gas made from spider venom.  Starring Simon Brent, Neda Arneric, Sheila Allen, Derek Newar, and others.  Directed by Peter Sykes.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

VENTO MI HA CANTATO UNA CANZONE, IL  (1947)  Also known as: "The Wind Sang Me a Song."  Musical comedy starring Laura Solari, Pietro Bigerna, Alberto Sordi, Virgilio Riento, and others.  Directed by Camillo Mastrocinque.  Dubbed in Italian, with no subtitles.  (A/A-).

VERITA' SECONDO SATANA, LA  (1972)  Also known as: "The Truth According to Satan."  Bizarre and subversive psychological horror outing from director Renato Polselli.  A man (played by Isarco Ravaioli) attempts to commit suicide, and fails.  When his fiancée (played by Rita Calderoni) kills him in self-defense, she then tries to get rid of the body, with some unexpected results.  Title also includes print of "Riti, Magie Nere e Segrete Orge nel Trecento." Dubbed in German and Italian, with no subtitles.  (B/B-). 

VERSAILLES AFFAIR, THE  (1960)  Original title: "Monsieur Suzuki."  Early spy thriller from France.  Secret agent is hired to locate top-secret documents relating to oil investments in time for a meeting in Versailles.  Starring Jean Thielment, Ivan Desny, Claude Farrel, and others.  Directed by Robert Vernay.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

VIGILE, IL  (1960)  Also known as: "The Traffic Policeman."  An unemployed man gets a job as traffic policeman but the traffic in the big city creates innumerous problems.  Comedy starring Alberto Sordi, Vittorio De Sica, Marisa Merlini, Riccardo Garrone, and others.  Directed by Luigi Zampa.  Dubbed in Italian, with no subtitles.  (A/A-).

VIOLENCE FOR KICKS  (1975)  Original title: "I Violenti di Roma Bene."  Brutal crime-drama from directors Sergio Grieco and Massimo Felisatti.  Antonio Sabato plays an undercover cop who works at nabbing a group of terrorists in Rome.  Lots of action- car chases, shootings, beatings, and more.  Also stars Franca Gonella, Cesare Barro, Giacomo Rossi-Stuart, and others.  Straight from Greek pre-record.  Dubbed in English, with Greek subtitles.  (A/A-).

VIOLENT PROTECTION  (1976)  Also known as: "Violent Naples."  Italian crime/action which features Maurizio Merli as Commissario Betti, a tough cop with a chip on his shoulder against all criminals.  Betti is unexpectedly transferred to Naples, where a local protection racket holds the city in fear.  However, when the police try to help, no one seems to know anything. VIRGIN WITCH, THE  (1972)  Very effective horror from Great Britain.  Christine gets her big chance at modelling when she applies at Sybil Waite's agency. Together with Christine's sister Betty they go to a castle for the weekend for a photo shoot. Sybil has lured Christine to the castle for more than modelling: she is recruiting a virgin for induction into a witch's coven, led by the owner of the castle, Gerald. To their surprise, Christine is more than eager to join the coven, but begins her own secret battle for control.  Starring Anne Michelle, Vicki Michelle, Keith Buckley, Patricia Haines, and others.  Directed by Ray Austin.  Dubbed in English.  (A/A-).

VLAD THE IMPALER  (1979)  Original title: "Vlad Tepes."  Romanian historical epic, which follows the life of the real Count Dracula.  Vlad subdues rebellions, violates peace treaties, and impales his enemies, to prevent Europe from becoming overrun by the legions of Mahomet.  A very well-made film which stars Ferenc Fabian, Emanoil Petrut, Alexandru Repan, and others.  Directed by Doru Nastase.  Letterboxed.  Dubbed in Romanian, with English subtitles.  (B/B-).

VOICE OF SILENCE  (1952)  Also known as: "Voce di Silenzio."  Made by G.W. Pabst in Italy as an Italo-French co-production, this film is notable for its extraordinary cast of actors and unusual story by Cesare Zavattini.  Five men enter a monastery for a short time to make a retreat.  Each has some dark secret that will come to light.  Stars Aldo Fabrizi, Jean Marais, Roberto Mauri, Paolo Stoppa, Daniel Gelin, Cosseta Greco, Rossana Podesta', and others.  Dubbed in Italian, with no subtitles.  (B/B-).

VOLCANO  (1950)  Also known as: "Vulcano."  Hard-to-find Italian drama, which takes place on a volcanic island.  Rossano Brazzi plays a diver who's also a procurer for the local prostitution ring.  Anna Magnagni is an ex-prostitute who has been banished to island by the police authorities, and only has her younger sister to console her.  Brazzi, after meeting the sister, soon begins to set his bait for her, but Magnani discovers his game, and attempts to stop him before it's too late.  Also stars Geraldine Brooks, Eduardo Ciannelli, Adriano Ambrogi, and others.  Directed by William Dieterle.  Dubbed in English.  (A-/B).

VUR  (1972)  Cool violent western from Turkey, about two bounty hunters hired to clean up a gang of bandidos.  One of them kills the boss, while the other one gets cozy with a sexy female gunslinger.  The only problem is, some outlaws bust out of jail and end up going after them.  To add to that, they're attacked by bloodthirsty Indians, and the boss comes back to life!  Toss in some fistfights, shootouts, and an electric music score.  Starring Kadir Inanir, Seyyal Taner, Kazim Kartal, Naci Erhun, and others.  Directed by Tunc Basaran.  Dubbed in Turkish, with no subtitles.  (B/B-).
